Hut Courtyard and Wall
Will you adopt this as your pet project?
Another major repair project is replacement of the concrete surface in the hut courtyard.
This patio is the original, installed after the "Wally Costa Huts" wing was added in the 60's.
This project is needed to finish an emergency repair from a few years ago (2006?) when the sewer system backed up and failed. Replacing the drain pipe was part of the repair, which required breaking up the old patio. The patio surface was the original from the 60's, in the 'exposed aggregate style'. Replacing the surface will present us with a choice on pavement materials. Should it be replaced with the historic surface? Or perhaps that new paving-stone surface would be more practical. The old courtyard has seen many a Delta Deut treading on it over the decades, and was probably due for a replacement anyway.
In the corner, there are holes which pass down to the crawl space under the house. You can
see the paver stones which 'plug' these holes.
Project Integration
To my mind this is part of the whole northern face of the hut 'compound' which has an inoperative door, and a wall condemned by the Berkeley Fire Department as 'unstable'.
The drain, above, is above grade so that rain water does not drain out.
